I remember being pregnant with my first child and thinking… oh please…

I’m going to rock this stay-at-home mom thing.

Naturally, I’ll have everything folded, ironed, and puffed. I’ll cook unusual dinners, coif my hair, and chuckle at the days ahead. It’ll be great not to have a job, and I’ll take a lot of naps.

I’m not sure when this whole thing broke apart… However, it was difficult for me.

In fact, my hormones became so out of control that I had to go with an anxiety counsellor, who gave me a beautiful pearl of knowledge.

I was used to being able to control everything in my environment.

Having a child forced me to confront a harsh reality: many things are beyond my control.

And, to be honest, knowing that made me want to improve my regimen even more.

Knowing that so many aspects of my day would be up to the baby, then the toddler, then the preschooler, the toddler, then the infant… so it became critical that I design my day to benefit both myself and the entire family.

There’s absolutely no getting around that… You’ll be rushing around like a chicken with its head chopped off if you don’t have a good stay at home mom schedule.

Important Things To Remember

Your stay-at-home mom schedule is critical as a stay-at-home mom. Here’s how to make an excellent one.

Put Sleep First

I pondered putting this first, but there’s no other option.

You’ll struggle to function if you’re a weary zombie. No matter how good your schedule is, if you’re not getting enough sleep, you’ll struggle.

You’ll probably go from being a calm mother to an angry mother.

It’s difficult to avoid when you’re sleep deprived because severe tiredness feels like torment.

You must prioritise both your children’s and your own sleep.

Set nap times for the kids and perhaps a power nap for yourself.

  • Put yourself to bed at a respectable hour, preferably two hours before midnight. Each hour slept before midnight is worth two hours later (source).
  • Maintain a rest period for older preschoolers who no longer nap.
  • Create efficient relaxation techniques.

The more sleep you get, the better you’ll feel. And the better you feel, the better the atmosphere at home.

Wake Up Early

There is often much discussion about getting up far earlier than your children.

In my experience, you should get up early enough to feel ahead of the day, but not so early that you fear the kids may wake up.

The optimal stay-at-home mom schedule considers both moods and timings.

Allow me to explain.

When I awoke 2 or 2.5 hours before the kids, I’d become so engaged in my work, hobby, or activity that I nearly felt resentful that they did.

Because it broke my deep work flow.

Time management experts recommend working blocks of 4 hours or less, and having 2 or 2.5 hours to myself got me In The Zone, and then…. BAM… everyone needed mommy.

I discovered a better solution.

I now get up around an hour to an hour and 15 minutes before the kids. Before I’m psychologically committed to something, I can sip a coffee, read my Bible, exercise, and then be ready to pick up the kids.

Nobody loves to leave things undone, so don’t get up so early that you start something you won’t be able to finish.

How to Make the Most of Early Mornings:

  • Create a ritual. It might be a cup of coffee with the Bible or anything else that signifies something to you. You are more likely to keep this habit if you have a ritual that you love.
  • Prepare the night before. Have books, coffee, clothes, food, or whatever else you need ready so you can get up and leave.
  • Make a rule in your family that no one comes out of their room unless you call them… This prevents Morning Wake Time Creep, in which they wake up earlier and earlier because you’re awake.

Do the Essential Tasks First

When it comes to creating your actual stay-at-home mom schedule, you must first fill in the framework.

The framework is made up of items that you believe are fixed and do not want to move. This may be something like this.

  • 7:30 | School Drop Off
  • 12:00 | Lunch
  • 1:00 | Afternoon Naps
  • 3:30 | School Pick Up
  • 7:30 | Bedtime

Every family is different, so decide what times you want to be fixed in stone and prioritise those. Then you’ll look at how much time you have remaining and work around it.

This indicates you don’t do it since you believe routines are ineffective. They do work; all they need is some breathing room.

Prioritize Down time

I have a confession to make.

I’m not sure if it’s good or terrible, but it’s here… I’ve conditioned myself to take afternoon naps. It wasn’t on plan, but I put all of the kids to sleep at the same time and then… I either work or take a nap.

I do both on a good day.

You’ll drive yourself insane if you make a schedule and fill every single minute.

Your stress hormones will rise, you will feel nervous and guilty since your timetable will not function, and you will feel like a failure. A much better concept is to schedule time in your day to do nothing.

This means you can fill them with activity or leave them empty.

How to incorporate rest periods:

  • Enforce sleep or rest periods with your children. Then take advantage of that time to rest.
  • Make independent play a daily priority, and use it for rest if you prefer to perform housework or work during your afternoon break.
  • Don’t leave all of your work till after the kids have gone to bed; instead, use that time to reconnect with your spouse or relax.

Create Routines Around Everything

Creating and maintaining house systems is an important part of being a stay-at-home mom. This includes cleaning, organising, cooking, tidying, and general house maintenance.

Hopefully, you have a spouse who understands that helping isn’t beneficial to you.

Even yet, if you’re at home all day, you’ll probably want to get some of these duties done quickly.

Create some daily routines centred on home systems first. Here are some quick and simple cleaning routines.

In our own home, routines include:

  • emptying the dishwasher rack in the morning.
  • No child leaves their room until it is clean and the bed is made.
  • If there are any chores to be done after breakfast, they should be done.
  • Clean up before nap time and do a fast sweep.
  • After the kids have gone to bed, do an evening sweep.
  • In terms of laundry, I alternate. My mother frequently brings clothes home with her.

I’ll do two loads a day some weeks. Some weeks, I’ll do seven loads in a single day.

I’m not sure what works best for me, but I’ve won the laundry battle since now, with 5 kids, I simply don’t bother about it. I simply do not.

This is the goal: to establish and maintain routines that allow you to operate the house without driving yourself ragged.

Kids Need Proper Routines

I don’t allow the kids determine the routine; instead, I pick one that I know would benefit us all and we proceed from there.

I set the waking time, and if they get up a little early, they play quietly in their rooms until it’s time to wake up.

Nearly everyone’s independent play occurs at the same time, allowing me to spend one-on-one time with a child or nurse a baby without worrying about what the others will be doing when I sit down.

Everyone eats lunch at the same time, takes naps at the same time, and goes to bed at the same time.

We stagger it such that we have individual time with each child while yet being in the same window.

Avoid the pitfall of allowing each youngster to develop their own regimen. It is beneficial to encourage independence. Giving your children authority over you is a positive thing.

But the only way to have a happy family with numerous children is to have a routine that works for everyone, especially you because you’re the one in command.

Routines Are So Important

The best routines are those that can be completed on autopilot. Even your toddlers can learn to stick to a routine if you make it visible to them.

While mama is still in charge of keeping the day running smoothly, having mini routines within the main daily plan allows children to participate in the enjoyment.

These could be as simple as always clearing their plates after eating. It could be picking up toys after playtime or snacking after watching cartoons.

By making daily associations, you can reduce the amount of difficulty your children experience with change.

Mini Routines Examples Throughout the Day:

  • Your morning routine before the kids get up.
  • Routines for breakfast What to eat, where to eat it, and what to do just after breakfast
  • Routines for snacks. What happens immediately before and after the snack, where to consume it.
  • Wind down routines for napping or resting. This will most likely involve a snack following a nap or rest period.
  • Routines for dinner. Who sets the table, clears the table, does the dishes, and so on?
  • Bathing and bedtime routines Bath, book, bed, and so on.

No, they don’t! Moms are experts at focusing on the majors while ignoring the minors. When you remain at home with newborns, toddlers, and preschoolers, so much of your day is dependent on them, and it’s practically difficult to run a home like a drill sergeant while taking everyone’s needs into account.
