A Little Story to Start…
I remember one Saturday morning, the kids were in that “I’m bored” mode that every parent dreads.
We had exhausted all our usual activities, and it was clear that screen time wasn’t the answer.
Then, out of the blue, my middle one, Ava, yelled, “Let’s play superheroes!” She grabbed an old towel and tied it around her neck like a cape.
Within minutes, our living room was transformed into a city in danger, with our kids playing the brave heroes coming to the rescue.
They even invited their little brother, who was still toddling at the time, to join in. And you better believe that I took on the role of the villain (complete with a cardboard crown) while they defeated me with their toy swords.
These moments, where their imaginations run wild, are some of my fondest memories.
And of course, I’ve learned to stock up on all sorts of dress-up costumes and accessories to make the games even more fun.

One of the easiest ways to get started with dress-up is with superheroes!

2. Princesses and Pirates
Let’s not forget the classic princess and pirate combo!
My youngest daughter loves to dress up in her princess gown (sparkly tiara included), while her older brother often chooses the pirate costume with a fierce eye patch and foam sword.
The best part is seeing how they interact, with her ruling the kingdom and him sailing the high seas—sometimes they even work together to find hidden treasure in our backyard.
3. Career Day Fun
I’ve found that kids also love pretending to be grown-ups.
A doctor dress-up kit, complete with a stethoscope, or a firefighter costume can make them feel like real-life heroes.
It’s an opportunity for kids to think about what they might want to be when they grow up while having fun acting out their future roles. Plus, these costumes make for fantastic pretend play scenarios with friends, teaching cooperation and communication.
4. Fantasy Adventures
For kids who love fairy tales, think about stocking up on some knight and dragon costumes.
My two older ones will often don their knight armor and set off on quests, while the youngest is more than happy to be the “friendly” dragon guarding the treasure (usually a pile of stuffed animals).
Fantasy dress-up games like these encourage them to work together, solving “mysteries” and imagining magical worlds right in our living room.
5. Mix and Match for Endless Fun
The beauty of dress-up games is that you don’t need to stick to a theme. Our dress-up box is full of random bits and pieces, like animal masks, old hats, scarves, and even some DIY pieces we’ve made together.
The kids love mixing it all up, creating their own unique characters that are a blend of pirate-princess or superhero-knight.
