The second trimester is often called the “honeymoon phase” of pregnancy, and with good reason!
By now, morning sickness is fading, energy levels are rising, and you can finally feel like yourself again.
But as the excitement builds and your bump grows, it’s easy to get caught up in baby daydreams and overlook some of the essential tasks to tackle before your little one arrives.
Here’s a helpful second-trimester to-do list that will keep you on track while still making room for all the fun baby prep moments!

One Saturday morning, I was curled up on the couch, sipping decaf tea and scrolling through Pinterest for nursery ideas.
As I rested my hands on my belly, it happened—a tiny kick! It felt like bubbles popping, and I froze for a second to make sure I wasn’t imagining it.
My heart swelled with joy, and I yelled for my partner to come feel. Of course, by the time they got there, the kicking had stopped.
Typical. But at that moment, I realized it was time to get serious about baby prep—it wouldn’t be long before this tiny kicker was in my arms.
That’s when I started my second-trimester checklist, determined to enjoy every step of the journey while staying on top of all the must-dos.
1. Start Building Your Registry
Now that you know the gender (or have decided to keep it a surprise!), it’s the perfect time to start building your baby registry.
Think beyond just cute onesies—focus on essentials like a diaper bag backpack, a bassinet with breathable sides, and a high-quality stroller.
Don’t forget to include items for yourself, like nursing pillows and postpartum essentials.
Having a well-thought-out registry will make it easier when friends and family ask, “What do you need for the baby?”
2. Plan Out the Nursery
Whether you’re going for a minimalist vibe or an elaborate theme, now is the time to start designing the nursery.
You’ll need a crib with adjustable mattress settings, a changing table dresser, and plenty of storage bins for organizing clothes and diapers.
I remember spending hours browsing Pinterest for nursery decor ideas, and it was so satisfying when everything came together.
Bonus tip: Make sure to snag a humidifier for babies to help with dry air during the colder months.
3. Stock Up on Maternity Clothes
As your belly grows, you’ll appreciate the comfort of stretchy maternity leggings and flowy maternity tops.
Trust me, there’s no reason to feel uncomfortable when you can be stylish and cozy.
This is also a great time to find a supportive maternity pillow to help you sleep better. I used mine well beyond pregnancy—it was a lifesaver during those last few months of restless nights.
4. Take a Babymoon
The second trimester is the perfect window for a babymoon! Plan a relaxing getaway to savor some couple time before the baby arrives.
Make sure to pack comfortable slip-on shoes (because who wants to bend over to tie laces?) and a travel-friendly pregnancy belt for added support during long walks.
These little getaways are priceless memories to look back on during the sleepless newborn phase.
5. Research Childbirth Classes
Even if this isn’t your first rodeo, childbirth classes can be incredibly helpful for both you and your partner.
Many online classes offer guidance on breathing techniques, pain management, and what to expect in labor. Some courses also cover breastfeeding tips and newborn care essentials.
6. Schedule Important Appointments
The second trimester is the time to schedule key prenatal appointments, like your anatomy scan around 20 weeks.
You’ll also want to book a tour of your birthing center or hospital, especially if you’re a planner like me. It’s also worth setting up a few non-baby appointments—like a dental checkup.
7. Prepare for the Glucose Test
Somewhere between 24 and 28 weeks, your doctor will schedule a glucose screening to check for gestational diabetes.
Be sure to ask your provider if you need to fast beforehand. I won’t lie—the drink isn’t exactly delicious, but it’s over quickly, and it’s an important part of keeping you and baby healthy.
8. Take Care of Yourself
This is the trimester to really embrace self-care. Treat yourself to pregnancy-safe skincare products, like belly butter to prevent stretch marks.
Book a prenatal massage if you can, or try gentle prenatal yoga. Staying active and relaxed will help you feel your best as you prepare for the exciting weeks ahead.
9. Start Thinking About Baby Names
Now’s the time to pull out that baby name book and start brainstorming. Keep a list on your phone to jot down ideas as they come.
My partner and I had so much fun tossing around names during car rides—though we didn’t officially agree until we saw our baby’s face!
10. Enjoy the Moment
The second trimester really is a sweet spot in pregnancy. Take time to enjoy the little things, like the first kicks and your growing bump.
It’s easy to get overwhelmed with all the to-dos, but this is a special chapter you’ll want to savor.
So, take a deep breath, put your feet up with a cozy maternity blanket, and give yourself grace along the way.
