Best Items To Pack To A River Day With Kids (Free Checklist!)
As a mom of three energetic kids, living close to a river has been a blessing during the summer months.
We make the most of it by heading down to the river a couple of times a week. Over the years,
I’ve mastered the art of packing for a river day to ensure everyone has a fantastic time.
Here are my top 12 river day essentials that every parent should consider bringing along.

River Day Essentials
1. Swimsuits

First things first, make sure everyone has their swimsuits on. Quick-drying, comfortable swimsuits are a must for splashing around in the river. Remember to pick swimsuits that are bright colored, and not blue so it easier to see the kids.
I always pack an extra set just in case the kids want to change into something dry later.
2. Sunglasses

Protecting our eyes from the sun is crucial, especially when we’re outside for extended periods.
I make sure each of my kids has a pair of UV-protection sunglasses.
Not only do they keep the sun out of their eyes, but they also add a cool factor to their river outfits.
3. Hats

A wide-brimmed hat for each kid is a non-negotiable item. It helps keep the sun off their faces and necks, preventing sunburn and overheating.
Plus, they look adorable in their matching hats!
4. Sunscreen

I can’t stress enough the importance of sunscreen. I opt for a waterproof, broad-spectrum sunscreen with a high SPF.
I apply it generously before we leave the house and bring it along for reapplication throughout the day.
5. Towels

I pack plenty of towels for drying off after swimming and for lounging on the riverbank. Quick-dry towels are my go-to as they don’t stay damp and heavy for long.
6. Drinks and Snacks

Keeping hydrated and fueled is key. I pack a cooler with water bottles, juice boxes, and a variety of snacks like fruit, sandwiches, and trail mix. The kids love having a little picnic by the water, and it keeps their energy levels up for more fun.
I am horrible for preparing snacks in advance so my go to snacks are these bars, and freeze dried fruit.
If you’re into preparing snacks at home, then this is a great snack box to bring.
7. Water Shoes

Water shoes are essential for protecting little feet from sharp rocks and slippery surfaces.
They provide good grip and comfort, allowing the kids to explore the river safely.
8. Goggles

Goggles are a hit with my kids. They love being able to see underwater and search for little fish or interesting rocks.
Plus, it keeps them entertained for hours.
9. Water Toys

Water guns, floaties, and bug catchers are a big part of our river day fun. The kids enjoy having a water gun fight, floating around on inflatable tubes, and catching little critters by the riverbank. It adds an extra layer of excitement to our outings.
Just be careful they don’t float away!
10. Dry Clothes

I always pack a set of dry clothes for each child.
After a day of swimming and playing, they appreciate changing into something dry and comfortable for the walk or drive home.
11. Camping Chair

A lightweight camping chair is perfect for me to sit back and relax while keeping an eye on the kids. It’s also great for having a comfortable place to sit during our snack breaks.
12. First Aid Kit

Accidents can happen, so I always bring a small first aid kit with band-aids, antiseptic wipes, and any necessary personal medications. It’s better to be prepared for minor scrapes and cuts.
13. BONUS – Tubes

Now for our river tips, we cannot bring tubes. The river is made for tubing down -atleast where we go swimming with the small kids.
There is a spot down the river where the adults and big kids go with tubes, but it’s not for us, not yet!
But if your river is a tubing river, bring some Tubes!
