Minimalist Baby Items To Consider
1. Car Seat
A car seat is non-negotiable for transporting your baby safely. Opt for an infant car seat that is easy to install and meets all safety standards.
Many models can also be attached to a stroller, making transitions smoother.
I really love Nuna brand car seats, or Peg Perego infant car seats.
2. Snap N’ Go Stroller
A Snap N’ Go stroller is a lightweight, versatile option that accommodates your infant car seat. It’s perfect for quick trips and navigating through tight spaces, and it can easily be stored in your car or home.
You may as well get a travel system, so the Mixx Next + Pipa Travel System is a great choice.
3. Diapers & Diapering Supplies
Whether you choose cloth or disposable diapers, having a good supply is crucial.
Additionally, stock up on diaper cream, wipes, and a diaper bag for changes on the go. A diaper pail can also be useful for managing waste and odors.
I loved this diaper cream, these baby wipes, and a stupid simple diaper bag like this ( you don’t need fancy, but get fancy if you want to.)
I used a diaper pail with #1, but didn’t bother with the next kids.
4. Clothes
Babies grow quickly, so keep their wardrobe simple. A few sets of onesies, sleepers, and socks will suffice. Choose soft, breathable fabrics that are gentle on your baby’s skin. Also, consider the season and temperature to ensure your baby stays comfortable.
I love organic clothes, but they can get expensive. Costco is the best place to buy reasonably priced clothes in my opinion. Their Pekkle onesies cannot be beat.
5. Swaddle Blankets
Swaddle blankets are multifunctional. They can be used for swaddling, as nursing covers, or as lightweight blankets. Look for breathable cotton or muslin blankets that are large enough to create a secure swaddle.
You can get swaddle blankets like this, or get zip up ones like these. I liked the zip ups, but everyone is different!
6. Somewhere for Baby to Sleep
A safe sleeping space is essential. Whether you choose a crib, bassinet, or co-sleeper, ensure it meets safety standards. A firm mattress with a fitted sheet is all you need. Avoid pillows, blankets, and stuffed animals in the sleeping area.
This is a great pack n play that comes with a detachable bassinet.
7. Sling or Baby Carrier
A baby carrier or sling allows you to keep your baby close while keeping your hands free. This can be particularly helpful for soothing a fussy baby or getting things done around the house. Look for ergonomic designs that support your baby’s hips and your back.
I’ve had every carrier under the sun, but Boba brand has been my fave. Here is a good structured carrier.
8. Medical Supplies
Basic medical supplies are a must for your baby’s well-being. This includes a digital thermometer, baby nail clippers, a nasal aspirator, and infant acetaminophen. It’s also wise to have a basic first-aid kit on hand.
9. White Noise Machine
A white noise machine or noisemaker can help soothe your baby to sleep by mimicking the sounds they heard in the womb. This can be particularly useful in creating a consistent sleep environment, even when traveling.
We used this one – I LOVED it.
10. Baby Monitor
A baby monitor allows you to keep an eye (and ear) on your baby while they sleep in another room. Video monitors offer visual reassurance, while audio monitors provide a simpler, more affordable option.
I didn’t use one, but VTECH makes good ones I hear.
11. Pacifiers
Pacifiers can be a soothing tool for your baby, helping them to calm down and sleep better. Make sure to choose pacifiers that are appropriate for your baby’s age and made from safe, non-toxic materials.
We used Nuk brand, that is what my daughter who used these liked. My other kids did not take to them.
12. Nursing Pillow
A nursing pillow provides support and comfort during breastfeeding or bottle-feeding sessions. It helps position the baby correctly and can reduce strain on your back and arms.
Nice to Have Baby Items to Consider
A Swing
A baby swing can be a lifesaver for calming and entertaining your baby. Choose a model with multiple speed settings and a comfortable seat. Some swings also come with built-in noisemakers and mobile toys for added stimulation.
Not all babies love the MamaRoo, but mine did. Oh boy, it was my lifesaver.
While the essentials will cover all your baby’s basic needs, there are a few additional items that can make life easier and more comfortable for both you and your little one. These “nice to have” items aren’t strictly necessary but can enhance your parenting experience.
A Seat
A baby seat, like a bouncer or rocker, is perfect for keeping your baby safe and entertained while you take care of household tasks. Look for a seat that provides gentle rocking motions and has a secure harness system.
An Exersaucer
As your baby grows and becomes more active, an exersaucer can provide a safe space for play and exploration. These activity centers support your baby’s development by encouraging movement and interaction with toys.
I prefer the bouncer like this, but you can get saucers that bounce less like this.
Bottle Warmer
A bottle warmer ensures your baby’s milk is warmed to the perfect temperature, which can be especially helpful during late-night feedings. It’s a convenient alternative to warming bottles in a pot of water.
I didn’t use one, but get the brand that matches you bottles.
Diaper Bag Organizer
A diaper bag organizer can keep all your baby’s essentials neatly arranged and easily accessible. Look for one with multiple compartments and pockets to keep things orderly.
I also did not use this!
High Chair
Once your baby starts eating solid foods, a high chair provides a safe and comfortable place for meals. Choose a model that is easy to clean and has a secure harness system.
I always went with a basic Ikea high chair…just note it was bulky and tripped on it a lot. LOL if i was to get another high chair I would spend money on the STOKKE Trip Trap. My friends have it, I love it.
Breast Pump
For breastfeeding moms, a breast pump can be a valuable tool. It allows you to express milk, store it for later use, and can help manage supply. There are manual and electric options available to suit different needs and preferences.
Madela brand is my favorite. But I didn’t really need to use my pump, even though I had a double, a single and a manual at home.
Play Mat
A play mat provides a safe, cushioned space for your baby to explore and practice tummy time. Look for mats that are easy to clean and feature engaging textures and patterns.
This is fun, but a nightmare to store. At least that’s what I found.
Baby Bathtub
A baby bathtub can make bath time easier and safer. Many models are designed to fit in your sink or bathtub and provide a comfortable, slip-resistant surface for your baby.
This is nice to have, but honestly, just use the big tub. Or borrow from a friend for a few weeks.
Teething Toys
Teething toys can provide relief for your baby when they start teething. Choose toys made from safe, non-toxic materials that are easy for little hands to hold.
A frozen washcloth does wonders, so you do not need these, but they are nice to have sometimes.
Baby Books
Introducing your baby to books early on can foster a love of reading and provide valuable bonding time. Look for durable, board books with bright colors and simple, engaging stories.
We are big into reading, so books were on my registry 100%. I’m in love with the Indestructible series.
Humidifier
A humidifier can help maintain optimal humidity levels in your baby’s room, which can be particularly beneficial during dry winter months or if your baby has a cold.
This is not needed, but quite nice to have when baby is sick. I had to go buy one off Facebook marketplace in the middle of the night once upon a time with my first born.
Bottom Line
By focusing on these 12 minimalist baby essentials, you can ensure that you have everything you need for your baby’s comfort and care, without the unnecessary clutter.
Remember, the most important thing is providing a loving, safe environment for your little one to grow and thrive.
